While throwing everything into the washing machine on the hottest cycle might be convenient in the moment after getting through a long day or week of busy schedules and running around, improper laundry practices are the single fastest way to destroy your intimates. We know from experience!
Compromising fabric elasticity, color and design, and underwear lifespan is not ideal. However, learning how to wash underwear properly is the key to extending the life of your garments, thus supporting a more sustainable lingerie care routine.
Common Laundry Mistakes to Avoid
As we are now aware of, many people do not know how to wash underwear. We are unknowingly using laundry methods that are harsh on our delicate intimate apparel. Similar to the different washing techniques we use for different parts of our bodies, delicate skin and fabrics call for more delicate attention as a better form of care and maintenance. Here are a few common mistakes to avoid the next time you go to wash your underwear.
- Hot Water Usage: High temperatures are the enemy of underwear elasticity. While great for deep cleaning and overall targeting sanitization, hot water usage in routine laundry cycles can cause garment damage. The high temperatures can break down fabric fibers, leading to underwear shrinkage, lingerie elasticity loss, color bleeding or fading, and stretched-out waistbands. Not ideal!
- Harsh Detergents: Strong chemical detergents, especially those with bleach or fabric softeners, can weaken the fabric structure of our underwear. The heavy chemicals on the delicate materials causes product degradation and quality reduction.
- The Dryer: Along with the high heat from the water as mentioned above, the high temperature of the dryer itself is an additional killer of underwear elasticity. It warps the fibers, shrinks fabrics, and can leave garments brittle after repeated usage. Dryer usage is a major reason for underwear fit issues post-laundry day.
Eco-Friendly Laundry Tips for Durability and Sustainability
While we recommend the good old hand-washing method, adopting an eco-friending laundry routine should be at the top of your 2026 bucket list. Not only does it save energy, but it also preserves the life and feel of some of your favorite pieces. Keeping the following tips in mind makes the most of your underwear lifespan and clothing budget.
- Use Cold or Lukewarm Water: While it is always best to check the care label on any piece you purchase, it is safe to say that cold or lukewarm water is best for sustainable lingerie care. While hot water is beneficial for deep cleaning and illness targeting, cold or lukewarm water options are equally as effective when paired with quality detergents and techniques. This tip uses significantly less energy and is crucial for maintaining fabric integrity and color.
- Gentle Cycle and Mesh Bags: Once our cold or lukewarm water is added, using the machine’s delicate or gentle cycle is important as well. For added protection and quality maintenance, placing all underwear in a mesh laundry bag is a great option. This prevents any chances of snapping zippers and other garment hooks while reducing twisting and stretching in the machine.
- Use a mild detergent: Opting for a gentle, pH-neutral, or eco-friendly detergent free of harsh chemicals, chlorine bleach, and heavy perfumes is a great way to wash underwear properly.
- Air dry is best!: Once your underwear are washed, always try to air dry them. Hang them over a drying rack or lay them flat on a clean surface. This eco-friendly laundry tip eliminates the damaging heat from the dryer. Similar to our haircare, the less heat the better.
- Pro-tip!: Keep some detergent in the bathroom and hand wash/hang dry panties while bathing. This way bacteria doesn't settle into fabric and you always have a clean pair ready to go!
